Nitrogen recovery efficiency for corn intercropped with palisade grass Bragantia
Almeida,Rodrigo Estevam Munhoz de; Favarin,José Laércio; Otto,Rafael; Franco,Henrique; Reis,André Froes Borja; Moreira,Lílian Angélica; Trivelin,Paulo.
ABSTRACT Intercropping corn and palisade grass is a technique to increase straw production, soil C contents, nutrient cycling and crop yield. However, concerns arise from nitrogen (N) uptake by the intercropping crop causing reduction in the yield of the corn. Our objective was to evaluate N recovery efficiency (NRE), and the N dynamics in the soil-plant system in corn intercropped with palisade grass. A field trial was carried out in Bahia, Brazil, evaluating two cropping systems: corn (monoculture) and corn intercropped with palisade grass sowed between rows on the same day as the corn crop, with four replicates in a completely randomized block design. Nitrogen (150 kg∙ha–1of 15N-urea) was applied at sowing to determine NRE, which means the amounts of...

Role of Natural Antioxidants in the Modulation of Plasma Amino Acid Pattern in Rats Exposed to Hemic Hypoxia BABT
Al-Rasheed,Nouf Mohamed; Fadda,Laila Mohamed; Al-Rasheed,Nawal Mohamed; Attia,Hala; Ali,Hanaa Mahmoud; El-Agami,Hanaa.
ABSTRACTThe aim of this work was to investigate whether the free radical scavengers, L-arginine (L-arg) and/or carnosine, either alone, or in combination would modulate tissue injury induced by hypoxia by measuring Fischer's ratio [concentrations of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs)/aromatic amino acids]. Decreased Fischer's ratios and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) led to pathogeneses of many diseases. Rats were injected with sodium nitrite (60 mg/kg) to establish hypoxia. They were treated with L-arg, (200 mg/ kg) and/or carnosine (200 mg/ kg) and their combination 24 and 1 h prior to sodium nitrite intoxication. The results revealed that hypoxia significantly decreased hemoglobin, arginine, citrulline and proline and increased sLDH, MDA , ammonia ,...

Feeding dairy cows with soybean by-products: effects on metabolic profile Ciência Rural
Alves,Marilia; González,Félix; Carvalho,Nelcy; Mühlbach,Paulo; Lima,Verônica; Conceição,Tiago Reis; Wald,Vera.
Soybean by-products are currently used in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, as a source of protein in dairy cows. However, the high protein breakdown of this feed source in the rumen causes loss of the intrinsic quality of the protein and increases plasma urea with deleterious consequences to animal metabolism. Thermal treatment of soybean can overcome this limitation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the metabolism of dairy cows fed with thermally treated soybean and raw soybean, through the analyses of the metabolic profile of plasma and milk. Twelve Holstein cows in mid-lactation period were studied using four treatments: commercial concentrated of protein, soybean meal, raw soybean and roasted soybean. Protein and urea levels in milk were measured in...

The effects of feeding urea on embryo production, quality and developmental stages and follicular status at the beginning of a superovulatory treatment of Toggenburg does fed urea diet were investigated in this study. Eighteen females were randomly allocated to receive diets with: no urea (control, n=8), and 2.4% urea dietary dry matter (n=10) UDM. The embryo recovery was performed at day 7 or 8 of estrus cycle by transcervical technique and classified according to quality and developmental stage. The follicular status was determined by transrectal ultrasonography at the first day of FSH injection. The number and quality of embryos were not affected by dietary urea concentration. Embryos from does treated with 2.4% UDM were recovered at advanced stage....

Ammonia poisoning causes muscular but not liver damage in cattle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Antonelli,A.C.; Torres,G.A.S.; Soares,P.C.; Mori,C.S.; Sucupira,M.C.A.; Ortolani,E.L..
Twelve steers were intraruminally administered a high dose (0.5g/kg BW) of urea to study the damage effect of ammonia poisoning on liver and/or muscles. Blood samples were collected to determine ammonia and activities of gammaGT, AST and CK. Eleven steers were successfully poisoned and treated properly, but one succumbed. Poisoned cattle showed high concentration of ammonia, and higher activities of AST and CK. The higher the ammonia, the greater were the activities of AST (r=0.59) and CK (r=0.61). The correlation between AST and CK was high and significant (r=0.80), but not between AST and gammaGT (r=0.19). The activities of AST and CK were higher after the beginning of the convulsive episodes due to ammonia poisoning. Those results showed that occurred...

Experimental ammonia poisoning in cattle fed extruded or prilled urea: clinical findings Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Antonelli,Alexandre Coutinho; Mori,Clara Satsuki; Soares,Pierre Castro; Kitamura,Sandra Satiko; Ortolani,Enrico Lippi.
Twelve yearling Girolando, rumen-fistulated steers never fed with urea before, were distributed randomly in 2 groups of 6 animals each. Both groups were administered intraruminally a single dose (0.5 g/kg BW) of extruded (G1) or prilled (G2) urea to induce ammonia poisoning. The clinical picture was followed for the next 240 min. Besides the classic signs the present study found 3 new additional sign: dehydration, hypothermia and ingurgitated episcleral veins. Convulsion, considered the definite sign, was seen in 5 out of 6 animals from both groups. One steer (G1) had only fasciculation, while another (G2) developed typical clinical signs, but not convulsion, and recovered spontaneously without treatment. The appearance of clinical signs such as muscle...

Effects on phytoplankton growth of dissolved substances produced by fish farming ArchiMer
Arzul, Genevieve; Clement, Alejandro; Pinier, Anne.
Fish Farming enriches the water column in dissolved organic and inorganic material. These materials excreed by the fish, elutriate from uneaten food and derive from other polluting substances. Ratios of the organic/inorganic forms of substances (for example N and P) are thus modified. Such perturbations in turn affect phytoplankton development. From in vitro analyses and tests of water taken from a turbot rearing tank, we show the changes in seawater chemical composition produced as well as the way growth was modified in three phytoplankton species: the diatom, Chaetoceros gracile, and the dinoflagellates, Gymnodinium cf. nagasakiense and Alexandrium minutum. Elutriates from the granules used for feed (0.1 to 100 mg.l(-1)) were found to be stimulating,...

Impacts of limestone and nitrogen top dressing application on the potassium content in the soil profile and marandu-grass leaf concentration R. Bras. Zootec.
Balieiro Neto,Geraldo; Reis,Ricardo Andrade; Ruggieri,Ana Cláudia.
The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of nitrogen doses (0, 100, 200, 300, and 400 kg ha-1 year-1), with or without dolomitic lime covering application, on the potassium (K) soil content at depths varying form 0 to 5, 5 to 10, and 10 to 20 cm, and the potassium concentration in the plant. The experiment was carried out in a rhodic ferralsol with a slightly rolling relief, in a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement, in a complete randomized block design, with four replications. Nitrogenated fertilization caused a linear increase in the potassium concentration in the plant and also in the mineral content in the 0-5 cm soil layer. An effect of competitive inhibition occurred between the potassium and calcium absorption, and potassium and...

UREASE ACTIVITY AND NITROGEN MINERALIZATION KINETICS AS AFFECTED BY TEMPERATURE AND UREA INPUT RATE IN SOUTHERN CHILEAN ANDISOLS R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Cartes,Paula; Jara,Alejandra A; Demanet,Rolando; Mora,María de la Luz.
Incubation studies were carried out to evaluate the effect of temperature and urea supply level on both the urease activity and the kinetics of N mineralization in two Andisols of Southern Chile. Our results showed that urease activity was higher in Piedras Negras soil (PNS) than Freiré soil (FS) at 24 and 48 h, and the enzyme was activated when the temperature increased from 5 to 21 °C. Urease activity followed a simple Michaelis-Menten kinetics. In PNS, the Michaelis Menten constant (Km) decreased, whereas the maximum enzyme reaction velocity (Vmax) and the catalytic efficiency increased when the temperature was raised up to 21 °C at 24 and 48 h of soil incubation. In FS, urease activity was the highest at 24 h, and it decreased at 48 h as a consequence...
